A tragic multi-vehicle collision recently took the life of a 58-year-old woman from New Haven and injured two others. The crash, which occurred on the Baldwin Bridge section of Interstate 95 in Old Lyme, involved four vehicles, and at the time of a local report, police were still investigating the exact cause of the accident.
According to the Connecticut State Police, the now-deceased woman was a passenger in a car that was disabled on the interstate at about 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 6. A box truck reportedly hit the car and then collided with a third vehicle. A fourth vehicle then approached and struck the disabled car.
The driver of the car occupied by the now-deceased woman also suffered injuries and was transported to a hospital to be treated. The extent of the 34-year-old woman’s injuries was not disclosed.
The truck driver reportedly suffered a head injury, and the other motorists involved in the accident appeared to be unharmed.
Obviously, collisions with large trucks can be devastating, and victims or their families often don’t know where to turn in the midst of their pain and grief. While the cause of this crash remains to be determined, Connecticut residents should know that in order for victims to recover the full amount of due compensation, it is necessary in many cases to conduct an investigation beyond the facts offered in the police report.
For example, if a commercial truck driver has violated federal safety standards and committed some form of negligence that led to another person’s injuries, the violation may not be apparent to investigating police officers. A closer look at the circumstances of a truck accident may lead to more evidence in proving a claim of truck driver negligence.
