What types of mistakes can cause a pedestrian accident?

As a pedestrian, you should always be aware of your surroundings. You need to know what’s happening at all times, as this will go a long way in helping you avoid a serious situation in which you’re struck by a vehicle.

Unfortunately, even if you’re careful of every move you make, it’s possible that you could still be part of an auto-pedestrian accident.

Here are some mistakes that drivers make that can result in this type of crash:

  • Distracted driving, such as texting, talking on the phone, eating, drinking or looking in the backseat of their vehicle
  • All forms of reckless driving, including but not limited to speeding and failure to yield to pedestrians at crosswalks
  • Disobeying traffic signals or signs
  • Failing to use turn signals
  • Disregarding traffic conditions
  • Disregarding weather conditions
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Drowsy driving

Drivers need to be aware of pedestrians who are near their vehicle. At the same time, pedestrians need to remember that not all drivers follow the rules of the road. Instead, they make mistakes for one reason or another, such as if they’re in a hurry to reach their destination.

Even though you do your best to avoid a pedestrian accident, you could find yourself knocked to the pavement and in extreme pain. At that point, you need to receive medical treatment as quickly as possible. After you take this key step and begin to recover, you can learn more about your legal rights and the best way to hold the negligent driver responsible for his or her actions.
