Children walking, school buses and driving safety in Connecticut

With the back-to-school season here, all drivers on the road need to pay extra attention to what is going on around them. This is especially true in the hours before and after school because these are times when the children are going to be walking around more, sometimes as they are heading to school or the bus stop.

As you can imagine, these kids might not be as safe as what they should simply because they are children. Here are some reminders for motorists who are going to be out on the roads with children and school buses:

Vehicles must stop for school buses

It is illegal for Connecticut motorists to pass a school bus that has the red warning lights on. Oncoming traffic and vehicles behind the bus must all stop to allow the children safe passage to and from the bus. When you stop, you must ensure that there is at least a 10-foot clearance between you and the bus, no matter which side of the road you are on.

Drivers have to use reduced speed in a school zone

The speed limits in these areas are clearly marked. In some cases, there are flashing lights on the signs. While you are in a school zone, pay special attention for children. They might not think about darting around and could end up in the street.

Children who are hit by a car should receive immediate medical attention. Once this is obtained, the parents might turn to a personal injury lawsuit to attempt to recover the financial damages caused by the crash.
