Know what terms come with a settlement offer

The severity of the injuries that occur in a semitruck crash can devastate every area of a person’s life. One thing that these victims can do is to seek compensation to try to get the trucker, trucking company, insurance company or another liable party to cover the costs associated with the crash. This isn’t always easy, but it is one of the few ways that they can find relief.

For some people, the focus is on going to trial and letting the actions of the liable party become part of the court record. For others, the need is a bit simpler – get compensation to help pay the bills that come with catastrophic injuries. For people who are concerned with the financial aspects of the case, going through a trial might not be desirable.

One possible way to resolve the matter is through a settlement. This enables you to let the other side know what you want to end the case. They can counter with another offer. These negotiations continue until you either reach a mutually agreeable settlement or until you call the process off in favor of going to a trial.

Some victims prefer the certainty of the settlement. They know what they are going to get. This doesn’t happen with the jury trial. Juries are unpredictable. They might not see things in your favor or they might issue a low-ball award.

If you are considering a settlement, make sure that you know the terms. Oftentimes, the other side won’t have to admit they were at fault. You might not be able to discuss the accident or settlement. For some, these are deal breakers. Your legal representation can help you weigh the pros and cons of each option you have.
