Distraction cited as cause for Wethersfield bus accident

Police believe that a female school bus driver who was transporting seven students to the Glastonbury East Hartford Elementary Magnet School was allegedly distracted from her duties as a bus driver when she accidentally rear-ended a Jeep that had stopped in front of her in Wethersfield. The woman has been cited for distracted driving and traveling too fast for conditions.

The accident, which happened on April 2, reportedly injured nine people including the woman bus driver who was transported to Hartford Hospital. The driver of the Jeep was also taken to the hospital and hospitalized after receiving some facial injuries; however, authorities report that his injuries were not considered serious. The students on board, who are thought to have ranged between the ages of 7 and 8 years old, were subsequently transported to the Children’s Medical Center for a precautionary evaluation as well.

Police continue to investigate the accident, but have reported that the traffic on the road had stopped at the time of the accident. Initial reports seem to indicate that the woman was distracted and did not realize that the Jeep in front of the bus was no longer moving. Police state that they do not believe she was on the phone at the time of the crash, but the cause of the distraction currently remains unknown.

Individuals who have received injuries due to the actions of a distracted driver may have valuable legal rights and could potentially be entitled to compensation for their pain and suffering. They may find it beneficial to learn more about these legal rights as they pertain to their case.
