3 tips for dealing with an insurance company after an auto injury

After an auto injury, you may face overwhelming medical bills, a lengthy recovery and lost income. When another driver’s negligence is the cause, his or her insurance company should provide the compensation you need to receive appropriate medical care while continuing to support yourself and your family.

Unfortunately, insurance companies often try to pay the minimum possible when settling a claim. If your injury is severe, the company may offer less than you are truly entitled to or even deny your claim to save money. Here are three tips to consider before you speak with an adjuster.

1. Avoid giving a recorded statement

Determining fault after an auto collision is often complex. Between the suddenness of the crash to the shock of the aftermath, you may find it difficult to remember the facts of the accident clearly.

An insurance adjuster may ask you for a recorded statement of the incident. While this may seem like innocent information gathering, know that the company may use this recording in the future as evidence against your injury claim.

2. Expect a low first settlement offer

Insurance companies often try to offer the lowest settlement possible. The amount may not be enough to recover both past and future expenses if the injury is severe. Before accepting an offer, make sure to consider all the costs related to your injury, including medical care, present and future wage losses and the impact on your quality of life.

3. Do not accept an offer too quickly

The extent of your injuries and the likelihood of a full recovery may not be clear for weeks or even months after an accident. If you accept an offer too quickly, the compensation you receive may not be enough to cover the cost of future medical treatments or even permanent impairment.
