Connecticut bus driver held on DUI after bus accident

A 30-year-old school bus driver from Willimantic, Connecticut, is behind bars and facing multiple criminal charges after allegedly driving under the influence while in the process of transporting a group of special needs students and a teacher’s aide in Norwich, Connecticut. Charges against the man include reckless endangerment, reckless driving, risk of injury to a minor and driving under the influence.

WFSB-TV, a CBS affiliate from Hartford, states that on Friday, Feb. 6 around 7:30 a.m., police were dispatched on a call after receiving reports that a bus had been involved in an accident on North Main Street. According to police, after the bus hit a parked car, the driver allegedly left the scene. Police report that a passerby had also indicated that he or she had seen the bus moving down the road in an erratic manner.

Although the bus driver reportedly had a commercial license and was permitted to legally drive a school bus, this was not his first incident of drunk driving. The driver was apparently involved in an earlier alcohol-related accident that occurred back in 2003, but had been able to have it removed from his record after undergoing Connecticut’s state alcohol education program back in 2005. Once the incident was removed from his record, the bus driver was then able to apply for and obtain his commercial license in 2014.

The man remained in jail over the weekend held in lieu of a $25,000 bond. He is expected to appear in court on Monday, Feb, 9.

Bus passengers who have been involved in an accident caused by a drunk driver may benefit from speaking to an experienced Connecticut attorney about their case.
